It’s not often you get to hear the soul-stirring sound of cello music being carried across the Langstrath Valley by a late summer wind …
A few weeks ago we had an unforgettable day with cellist Sarah Smout, who has composed a beautiful piece of music to accompany the forthcoming Resonance film. Sarah set up to play among the circle of seven silver birch trees that we planted with a happy crew of twenty other folk back in April.
Filmmaker Matt Sharman is directing and producing the film, having been on the Resonance journey with us since the middle of 2024. I (Harriet) have composed a poem for the film’s narrative – music and poem are both under wraps for now while Matt gets on with the editing!

If you’ve not yet heard about Resonance, head over to the PLACE Collective website to find out more. Rob and I have been leading this project, working with other artists from the PLACE Collective, as part of our work with the LUNZ Hub: a series of events spinning around the co-creation of a living sculpture – our way of bringing people together, with the land, in discussions about land use and change. Seven circles of seven birch trees, carefully removed from the being-restored peat bog, Bolton Fell Moss, are now being located in a constellation around the Lake District National Park. Huge thanks to the Lake District National Park and the National Trust, University of Cumbria, Natural England, Forestry England, Friends of the Lake District and Cumbrian farmers, and the many people who’ve joined volunteer days to collect, plant and tend the trees.
